Style Guide For Families
Over the course of a decade, I've seen it all when it comes to family photo session outfits. From mismatched patterns to clothing that doesn’t fit, it's easy to make a fashion faux pas in front of the camera. But have no fear, with this guide you'll be sure to have everyone looking their best for you family session!

Coordinate, don't match. Choose complementary colors that bring out the best in everyone's individual style and skin tone. Think earthy tones like greens, blues, and browns, or classic neutrals like black, beige, and white.
Add warmth to your color palette. I photograph primarily outdoors and adding warm neutrals (think beige, warm whites, deep browns and other warm tones) will enhance your images. You can dress in 100% neutrals for a very soft ‘feel’ in your images or your can add pieces and pops of color for a unique flare.
Dress for the season. If it's a spring session, opt for light, flowy fabrics and soft colors. For a winter session, cozy layers and deeper hues that contrast against the snow are beautiful.
Avoid logos and graphics. Keep the focus on your family and not the brand names on your clothes.
Mix patterns, but wisely. If one person is wearing stripes, balance it out with a solid color on someone else. And don't be afraid to mix soft patterns within the same color scheme!
Accessorize with care. A statement piece of jewelry, stacked bracelets, a fun scarf, or a fedora can add the perfect finishing touch.
Choose clothing that flatters your body type. Opt for clothing that fits well and accentuates your best features.
Make sure everyone is comfortable. If your little ones are prone to fidgeting, steer clear of stiff, scratchy fabrics.

Matching outfits: Matching outfits can look too coordinated and unnatural. Instead, opt for complementary colors that blend well together. Do not buy the same piece for any 2 or more people.
Graphic Tees: Graphic tees, logos, and busy patterns can distract from the faces in the photos.
Clothes that are too tight or too loose: Clothing that is too tight can create unflattering lines, while clothing that is too loose can add bulk. Choose clothing that fits well and is comfortable.
Wearing all white or all black: Wearing all white or all black can wash out faces in the photos, it's better to mix and match light and dark colors.
Wearing the latest fashion: Trends come and go, it's better to choose timeless, classic clothing that will not look dated in the future.
Overall, the goal is to wear clothes that are comfortable, flattering, and not distracting from the faces in the photos.
